Synchronized skating, a fifty-year old sport that began in the United States, joins the men’s ladies, pairs, and ice dance competitions as the fourth discipline. ‘Synchro’ as the sport is known by its fans, is sanctioned by The US Figure Skating Association and the International Skating Union. Synchro is considered to be the fastest growing part of competitive figure skating with more than 500 teams and 5,000 skaters competing across the United States. The sport of Synchronized skating is attracting fans due to its speed, artistry, and the excitement of 8-20 skaters on the ice competing in a team sport. Synchronized skaters are increasingly recognized as the most versatile of competitive skater-athletes as they perform elements from singles, pairs, and ice dance. It uses the same judging system as singles, pairs, and dance and is characterized by teamwork, speed, intricate formations, and challenging step sequences. As with other disciplines, all teams perform a free skate with required well-balanced program elements. In addition, teams at the junior and senior level perform a short program consisting of required elements.
Welcome to the official site of the Skyliners Synchronized Skating Team! We are proud to represent the Skating Club of New York in NYC, the Skating Club of Fairfield County in Connecticut, and the Essex Skating Club in New Jersey. Our mission is to prepare skaters to compete at the highest level of synchronized skating locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. To do this, we offer training both on and off the ice to develop our athletes from the beginner through elite levels. We strive to continue to be one of the most competitive teams in the country and welcome skaters who are looking for this challenge.
Skyliners Synchronized Skating Team was established in 2001 by a group of parents who wanted to create a new competitive synchronized skating club in the tri-state area. Over the last nineteen seasons, Skyliners has grown to be one of the top synchronized skating clubs in the country, winning 16 National Championships, 33 Eastern Championships, and back-to-back Silver and Bronze medals at Junior Worlds in 2018 and 2019, the first worlds medals ever for Team USA Junior. 2020 also marks the third year that our Senior line has been chosen to represent Team USA at Senior Worlds. The tremendous growth and success of the team are attributed to the dedicated athletes, the talented coaches and the devoted Board members and parent volunteers who make Skyliners possible season after season.
This 19th season, Skyliners is fielding 14 competitive lines with more than 240 skaters ranging in age from 5 to 24. While the majority of the skaters reside in the tri-state area, we also have skaters from Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Wisconsin. Skyliners train at various rinks throughout the tri-state region. Our Senior, Junior, Novice Blue, Novice Black, Intermediate and Juvenile qualifying lines and Central Park Skyliners developmental lines represent the Skating Club of New York; our Pre-Juvenile, Preliminary, Pre-Preliminary, Beginner and Intro to Beginner non-qualifying lines represent the Skating Club of Fairfield County; and our New Jersey Preliminary and Beginner lines represent the Essex Skating Club.
Each season, Skyliners participates in numerous competitions throughout the world. Since 2004, every one of our qualifying lines has earned a spot to the National Championships. Both our Junior and Senior lines are designated Team USA, and represent the United States at international events. In the 2018-19 season, the Junior line captured Silver medals at the Cup of Berlin and the French Cup, 1st place in the United States and 3rd in the World in Neuchatel, Switzerland. The Senior line captured Silver medals at the Cup of Berlin and 6th at the Mozart Cup in Austria, 2nd place at Nationals and 8th in the World in Helsinki, Finland.
Skyliners is often featured at special exhibitions and ice shows. In past seasons, the team performed in Holiday on the Hudson, the tree lighting at Riverbank State Park, the Ice Theatre of New York Annual Gala, Bryant Park, the Rye FSC 80th Anniversary Gala, half-time at regional hockey games, as well as local learn to skate exhibitions. Skyliners have also been invited to perform on televised productions such as the Today Show, Good Morning America, The Rachael Ray Show, even as models during Fashion Week at Wollman Rink. The team gives back to the community with its involvement in charity fundraisers throughout the region and the annual Pajama Drive.
